Garden Bumble Bee

Bombus Hortorum

Bombus Hortorum

Info

Known as the "Garden Bumblebee," this fuzzy visitor is the ultimate specialist of the pollinator world. Famous for its incredibly long tongue, it can reach nectar hidden deep inside flowers that other bees simply can’t touch. It is a gentle, hardworking giant that acts as a vital engine for biodiversity in backyard ecosystems across Europe and beyond.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🐴 The Long Face: Unlike many bees with round heads, this species has a distinctively long, "horse-like" face to accommodate its massive tongue.
  • 🟡 Three Yellow Bands: It sports three bright yellow stripes—two on the thorax (the middle section) and one at the front of the abdomen.
  • Snowy Tail: The very tip of the abdomen is a clean, crisp white, making it easy to spot as it dives head-first into tubular flowers.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌺 The Deep-Flower Specialist: Because its tongue can be nearly as long as its entire body, it gravitates toward "complex" flowers like Foxgloves, Honeysuckle, and Monkshood. If you plant deep, tubular blooms, this bee will be your most frequent guest.
  • 🏠 Nesting Habits: They are opportunistic homeowners, often moving into abandoned mouse burrows, thick grass tussocks, or even the space under a garden shed. Their colonies are small and intimate, usually consisting of fewer than 100 individuals.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🐝 Peaceful Neighbors: These bees are remarkably docile and focused on their work. They have no interest in humans and will only sting if they are squeezed or if their nest is physically stepped on.
  • 🐾 Pets & Kids: While the sting is painful, it is not medically significant unless there is a rare allergic reaction. To keep pets safe, simply avoid disturbing low-lying nests in compost heaps or tall grass.

✨ Fun Fact

The Garden Bumblebee’s tongue is so long (up to 15mm) that it was specifically exported to New Zealand in the 19th century to help pollinate Red Clover, a plant that local New Zealand bees couldn't handle!
