New World Checkered-Skippers

Burnsius

Burnsius

Info

Often known as the Checkered-Skippers, these little dynamos are the acrobats of the insect world. While they are true butterflies, their stout, fuzzy bodies and frantic wingbeats often lead people to mistake them for moths. They are famous for their "skipping" flight pattern—a rapid, zigzagging motion that makes them appear to vanish and reappear in the blink of an eye.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🏁 Wing Pattern: The most striking feature is the high-contrast, "pixelated" mosaic of white squares set against a dark charcoal or chocolate-brown background.
  • 🧶 Stout Build: Unlike the delicate, slender bodies of many butterflies, Burnsius has a thick, hairy thorax and a large head, which houses the powerful muscles needed for high-speed flight.
  • 📡 Hooked Antennae: Their antennae are widely spaced at the base and end in tiny, backward-curved hooks called "apiculi," a hallmark of the skipper family.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌻 Nectar Lovers: You will find them darting low over lawns, meadows, and roadsides. They are active pollinators, favoring small, sun-drenched wildflowers like clover, shepherd’s needle, and various mallows.
  • 🍃 Leaf Tent Builders: The larvae (caterpillars) are clever architects. They use silk to fold over the edges of leaves—usually from the Mallow family—creating a private, silk-lined "tent" where they hide during the day to avoid birds.
  • 🤺 Territorial Spirits: Males are surprisingly feisty for their size. They often perch on flat leaves or bare dirt, lunging out to "chase" anything that flies into their territory, including much larger butterflies and even curious hikers.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • Harmless: The Checkered-Skipper is a total "friend" in the garden. They have no stingers, do not bite, and are not toxic if accidentally touched.
  • 🌿 Plant Health: While the caterpillars do munch on foliage, they are rarely numerous enough to cause significant damage to garden plants or crops, making them a low-risk visitor for hobbyist gardeners.

✨ Fun Fact

  • 🚀 Speed Demons: Skippers are among the fastest-flying butterflies in the world. Some species have been clocked at speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour, which is why they seem to "teleport" across your garden!
