Often called the Yellow-shouldered Drone Fly, Eoseristalis stipator is a classic case of nature’s "costume party." It spends its days dressed up as a honeybee to scare off predators, while secretly being a harmless, expert pollinator. 🔍 How to Identify

• 👀 The "Fly" Eyes: Unlike the bees they mimic, these flies have massive, compound eyes that take up most of their head. In males, the eyes actually touch at the top.
• 🐝 Masterful Mimicry: They sport fuzzy, yellow-and-black banded abdomens. This "Batesian mimicry" tricks predators into thinking they are a stinging threat when they are actually defenseless.
• ✈️ Wing Check: A tell-tale sign is the wings. While bees have four wings (two pairs), this fly has only two. You can often spot tiny, knob-like structures called "halteres" behind the wings which help them balance mid-flight.
