Tree Weta

Hemideina

Info

Often called "New Zealand’s living fossils," the Tree Weta (genus Hemideina) is a heavy-bodied, flightless wonder that has survived virtually unchanged for millions of years. While their fierce, armored appearance and massive mandibles make them look like miniature monsters, they are actually shy, nocturnal forest dwellers. In Māori culture, they are known as Pūtangitangi, the "crying land-shrimp."

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🦷 Oversized Mandibles: Males possess massive, tusk-like jaws used for wrestling other males, while females have smaller, more functional mouthparts.
  • 🛡️ Armored Thorax: Their bodies are encased in a thick, shiny exoskeleton, usually in shades of woody brown, black, or deep mahogany.
  • 📡 Sweeping Antennae: They lack wings, so they rely on exceptionally long, sensitive antennae to navigate the dark forest canopy and detect nearby movement.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🏠 Harem Life: Tree Wetas are social insects that live in hollowed-out tree cavities called "galleries." A single dominant male typically guards a hole filled with several females and juveniles.
  • 🍃 Forest Gardeners: They emerge at night to forage on a variety of leaves, fruit, and seeds. Because they travel between trees, they play a surprising role in seed dispersal within the New Zealand bush.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🦷 The Pinch: They are non-venomous and generally peaceful. However, if they feel cornered or are handled roughly, a large adult can deliver a sharp, painful pinch with their mandibles.
  • 🦵 Spiny Defense: When threatened, they raise their spiny back legs over their heads and lash out. This "kick" is their primary defense against predators like birds or rats and can scratch human skin.

✨ Fun Fact

Tree Wetas don’t hear through their heads! Their "ears" (tympanal organs) are actually located on their front legs, just below the knee joints, allowing them to sense the vibrations of approaching predators through the bark of a tree.
