Hesperocorixa Castanea

Often found rowing through the quiet waters of garden ponds and marshes, Hesperocorixa castanea is a master of the underwater world. While their quick, darting movements might startle a gardener, these "Water Boatmen" are actually beneficial neighbors that help keep your pond’s ecosystem in balance. They are the peaceful rowers of the insect world, often mistaken for more aggressive aquatic bugs.

🔍 How to Identify

• 🛶 Oar-like Legs: Their hind legs are significantly elongated and fringed with tiny hairs, functioning exactly like paddles to propel them through the water with powerful strokes.
• 🌰 Chestnut Hue: True to their scientific name (castanea), they sport a deep, reddish-brown or chestnut coloration on their shield-shaped backs, which helps them blend into the decaying leaf litter at the bottom of ponds.
• 🛡️ Streamlined Body: They have a flattened, oval-shaped body that is perfectly aerodynamic (or hydrodynamic) for gliding through dense aquatic vegetation.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

• 🍽️ The Pond Vacuum: Unlike many of their predatory aquatic cousins, these insects are primarily scavengers. They use their specialized, scoop-like front legs to collect algae and microscopic organic debris from the pond floor.
• 🫧 Scuba Diving Experts: They carry their own oxygen supply! If you look closely, you may see a silvery "glow" on their undersides; this is a trapped bubble of air (a plastron) that allows them to breathe while submerged for long periods.

• ✅ Harmless Neighbor: Hesperocorixa castanea is completely harmless to humans. They do not have the piercing mouthparts used for "biting" that their look-alike relatives, the Backswimmers, possess.

While most aquatic bugs in the "true bug" order swim upside down on their backs, the Water Boatman is a "right-side-up" swimmer. You can always tell them apart from the biting Backswimmers because the Boatman will always show you its dark back, while the Backswimmer shows its pale belly!
