Variegated Cutworm Moth

Peridroma Saucia

Peridroma Saucia

Info

Often called the Variegated Cutworm, Peridroma saucia is the "ninja" of the vegetable patch. While the adult moth is a master of camouflage, the caterpillar stage is famous among gardeners for its frustrating habit of "cutting" down young seedlings overnight. Originally from the Americas, this hardy traveler has successfully hitched rides across the globe, becoming one of the most common moths found in backyards today.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 💎 The Signature Spots: The easiest way to spot the caterpillar is a row of four to seven distinct pale-yellow or white diamond-shaped spots running down the center of its back.
  • 🥐 The Defensive Curl: If disturbed, the larva will immediately roll itself into a tight, firm "C" shape or spiral to protect its soft underbelly.
  • 🦋 The Mottled Moth: Adult moths are medium-sized with brownish-gray forewings featuring a subtle, kidney-shaped mark and pale, almost translucent hindwings.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🍽️ The Ultimate Generalist: Unlike picky eaters, this insect is a "polyphagous" feeder, meaning it enjoys a menu of over 200 different plants, ranging from garden tomatoes and clover to commercial crops like corn and alfalfa.
  • 🌑 Night Shift Behavior: During the day, they are master hiders, tucking themselves under leaf litter or just beneath the soil surface. They emerge only at night to feed, which is why gardeners often see the damage before they ever see the culprit.
  • 🧗 The Climbing Cutworm: While many cutworms stay at ground level, the Variegated Cutworm is an excellent climber and will scale tall plants to munch on fruit and foliage high above the dirt.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🛡️ Harmless to Humans: This insect is completely safe for people and pets. It does not bite, sting, or possess any irritating hairs or toxins.
  • 🌱 Garden Foe: While safe to touch, they are considered a "foe" in the garden. Because they target the stems of young plants, a single caterpillar can destroy several seedlings in a single night.

✨ Fun Fact

Unlike many of its relatives that stay put, the Variegated Cutworm is a seasonal traveler. In some regions, they are known to perform long-distance migrations, flying hundreds of miles to find the perfect climate for their next generation!
