Executioner Wasp

Polistes Carnifex

Polistes Carnifex

Info

Known as the Executioner Wasp, the Polistes carnifex holds a fearsome reputation as the heavyweight champion of the paper wasp world. Native to Central and South America, this giant is famous not for its aggression, but for possessing what is often described as the most painful sting of any wasp in the world. Despite its intimidating name, it is a vital predator that helps keep garden pests in check.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 📏 Impressive Size: This is one of the largest social wasps in existence, often reaching lengths of up to 1.5 inches (3.5 cm).
  • 🎨 Golden Markings: They are primarily bright yellow with distinct reddish-brown or dark chocolate bands across their abdomen and thorax.
  • 🛡️ Powerful Mandibles: They possess exceptionally large, strong jaws used for macerating prey, which gives their "face" a very formidable appearance.
  • ✈️ Languid Flight: Unlike the frantic zig-zagging of smaller wasps, the Executioner flies with a heavy, deliberate drone, often letting its long legs dangle beneath it.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🐛 The Caterpillar Hunter: These wasps are beneficial predators. They hunt large caterpillars, which they chew into a "meat bolus" to carry back to their larvae.
  • 🏰 Small-Scale Architecture: Unlike Yellowjackets that build massive colonies, the Executioner builds relatively small, open-faced paper nests hung by a single stalk (petiole) under large leaves or building eaves.
  • 🌳 Territorial Leanings: While not aggressive, a queen or worker will fiercely defend the immediate vicinity of their nest if they feel the structure is threatened.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🔥 Extreme Pain: The sting is legendary for its intensity. It contains enzymes that can cause localized tissue damage (necrosis) and pain that lasts significantly longer than a common bee sting.
  • 🚫 Low Aggression: Fortunately, they are "gentle giants." They typically ignore humans unless you get within a few inches of their nest or attempt to swat them.
  • 🐾 Pet Warning: Keep curious dogs and cats away; a sting to the face or mouth can cause severe swelling that may obstruct breathing.

✨ Fun Fact

The Polistes carnifex gained massive internet fame when wildlife educator Coyote Peterson filmed himself being stung by one, officially crowning it the "King of Stings" due to the sheer duration and "burning" quality of its venom.
