Cabbage-Stem Flea Beetle

Psylliodes Chrysocephalus

Psylliodes Chrysocephalus

Info

Often called the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle, this tiny metallic acrobat is a common sight in vegetable patches across Europe and parts of North America. While its shimmering coat makes it look like a piece of living jewelry, it is a notorious "foe" for gardeners who love growing kale, cabbage, or broccoli. It is best known for its incredible jumping ability and its appetite for all things in the mustard family.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🪲 The "Golden" Head: Its scientific name, chrysocephalus, literally translates to "golden-headed." This refers to its distinct orange-to-reddish head that contrasts sharply with its dark body.
  • 💎 Metallic Sheen: The wing cases (elytra) are typically a deep, lustrous metallic blue, green, or near-black, giving the beetle a polished, jewel-like appearance.
  • 🦵 Spring-Loaded Legs: Like its namesake, the flea, this beetle possesses greatly enlarged hind thighs. If you try to touch one, it will use these powerful muscles to "pop" or launch itself away in an instant.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🥬 The "Shot-Hole" Signature: You will likely spot their handiwork before you see the insect itself. Adults eat small, circular holes in leaves, leaving plants looking as though they have been hit by tiny shotgun pellets.
  • 🐛 Hidden Larvae: While the adults enjoy the foliage, their pale, worm-like larvae are "miners." They burrow into the leaf stalks and stems, which can cause young plants to wilt or stop growing entirely during the winter and spring.
  • 🌱 Mustard Family Specialist: These beetles are highly picky eaters. They are almost exclusively found on Brassicaceae plants, including oilseed rape, cabbage, kale, horseradish, and even wild mustard weeds.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🛡️ Harmless to Humans: This beetle is entirely safe for people and pets. It does not bite, sting, or carry any diseases that affect mammals.
  • 🥦 Vegetable Threat: While safe for you, they are a significant threat to your harvest. Small seedlings are at the highest risk, as a group of these beetles can consume enough leaf surface to kill a young plant in just a few days.

✨ Fun Fact

Relative to its size, the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle is an Olympic-level athlete. It uses a "toothed" spring mechanism in its hind legs to store elastic energy, allowing it to accelerate at a rate that would be impossible for normal muscles alone!
