Black Horse Fly

Tabanus Atratus

Tabanus Atratus

Info

The Black Horse Fly (Tabanus atratus) is the "heavy-metal" fan of the insect world. Dressed in all-black and known for its intimidating size, it is a frequent summer guest in rural and wetland areas. While its deep hum sounds like a miniature drone, this insect is a masterful aviator that has existed alongside mammals for millions of years.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🪰 Size & Color: This is one of the largest flies in North America, reaching up to an inch in length. It is entirely jet-black, often sporting a velvety or bluish-charcoal sheen.
  • 🌑 The Wings: Unlike the clear wings of a common housefly, these wings are smoky black, making the insect look like a dark shadow when in flight.
  • 👁️ The Eyes: They possess massive, wrap-around eyes. In the right light, these can reveal hidden flashes of iridescent green or purple, though they usually appear as dark as the rest of the body.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 💧 Water Lovers: You will most likely encounter them near marshes, ponds, or damp meadows. Their larvae are fierce aquatic predators, hunting small worms and other insects in the mud.
  • 🍭 Sugar vs. Blood: Interestingly, only the females seek out blood to provide protein for their eggs. The males are peaceful pollinators that spend their short lives sipping nectar from flowers.
  • 🏃 Visual Hunters: Unlike mosquitoes, which mostly "smell" you, these flies hunt primarily by sight. They are attracted to large, dark, moving objects—which is why they often chase cars or galloping livestock.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🩸 The Bite: The female’s bite is famously painful. Unlike a mosquito’s needle-like sting, the horse fly has scissor-like mouthparts that "slash" the skin to lap up blood.
  • 🐕 Pets & Livestock: They can be a major nuisance to dogs and horses. If you see your pet snapping at the air or running frantically in the heat of the day, a Black Horse Fly might be the culprit.
  • 🛡️ Protection: They are not venomous, but their bites can cause localized swelling. Standard insect repellents containing DEET are effective, but wearing light-colored clothing is often the best defense, as they are less attracted to pale colors.

✨ Fun Fact

✈️ Aero-Aces: Horse flies are among the fastest flying insects in the world. They have been clocked at speeds exceeding 25-30 miles per hour, allowing them to easily keep pace with a running deer or a horse.
