Toothed Weaver

Textrix Denticulata

Info

Known as the Toothed Weaver, this nimble spider is a master of camouflage and high-speed architecture. Often found darting across sun-warmed stone walls, it gets its name from the distinct "toothed" pattern running down its back. While its long, tail-like spinnerets might look intimidating to the untrained eye, this spider is a shy garden ally that specializes in keeping pest populations under control.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🦷 The "Teeth": Look for a dark abdomen marked with a pale, jagged, or "toothed" central stripe that resembles a saw blade.
  • 🧵 Prominent Spinnerets: It features two very long, visible spinnerets at the rear of the abdomen, which can look like a small split tail.
  • 🦵 Stocky Build: Unlike the spindly legs of a cellar spider, this weaver has relatively short, robust, and hairy legs designed for sprinting rather than dangling.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🧱 Urban Mountaineer: Its favorite haunts are dry stone walls, rockeries, and the crevices of old brickwork. It rarely ventures deep inside modern homes, preferring the "great outdoors" of your garden.
  • 🕸️ The Funnel Fortress: It builds a flat, sheet-like web that terminates in a silken tube or funnel. The spider hides in this "back door" and rushes out with incredible speed when a fly or beetle trips the silken tripwires.
  • ☀️ Sun Seeker: You are most likely to spot them during the day on south-facing walls, as they enjoy the warmth which helps keep their metabolism high for hunting.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🛡️ Non-Aggressive: The Toothed Weaver is not a biter. It would much rather retreat into its funnel than face a human.
  • 🐾 Pet & Child Safe: It is not considered medically significant. Even if it were to bite in self-defense, the effect would be less than a mild bee sting, and it carries no toxins dangerous to cats or dogs.

✨ Fun Fact

  • Lightning Reflexes: Textrix denticulata is one of the fastest spiders in the weaver family. It can detect the frequency of an insect's footfalls through its web and strike in less than a tenth of a second!
