Eastern Double Drummer

Thopha Saccata

Thopha Saccata

Info

Known as the Double Drummer, Thopha saccata is Australia’s largest and loudest cicada. These iconic insects are the heavy metal stars of the Australian bush, emerging in massive numbers during hot summers to create a deafening wall of sound. While their size and the vibrating "drums" on their sides can be intimidating, they are harmless giants that spend most of their lives tucked away underground.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🥁 The "Drums": The most iconic feature is the pair of large, sack-like covers (tymbals) on the sides of the male’s abdomen, which look like tiny saddlebags and amplify their song.
  • 📏 Impressive Size: They are massive, with a wingspan reaching up to 15 centimeters (6 inches) and a robust, heavy body.
  • 🎨 Camouflage Colors: Their bodies are typically a mosaic of rich brown, black, and orange-tan, perfectly matching the bark of the Eucalyptus trees they frequent.
  • 💎 Glassy Wings: They possess clear, translucent wings with thick, prominent veins that shimmer under the summer sun.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌳 Sap Seekers: Both nymphs and adults feed exclusively on xylem sap. They use a needle-like rostrum to pierce the bark of trees (especially Eucalypts) to drink the nutrient-poor but water-rich fluid.
  • Life in the Dark: Before they emerge to sing, the nymphs live underground for several years, tunneling through the soil and feeding on tree roots. They only emerge when the ground reaches the perfect temperature.
  • 🎶 The Chorus: The males sing in "choirs." By synchronizing their calls, they confuse predators like birds, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint a single insect's location.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • Harmless Friend: Double Drummers are not venomous and do not have a stinger. They are completely safe to be around.
  • 📍 The "Tree" Mistake: Occasionally, if a cicada lands on your arm, it may mistake you for a tree and attempt to "sample" you with its mouthpart. This feels like a tiny, harmless pinprick, but they will quickly realize their mistake and fly away.
  • 👂 Ear Protection: The only real "danger" is the noise! Their call is loud enough to cause physical discomfort if you are standing directly next to a swarm in full song.

✨ Fun Fact

The Double Drummer is one of the loudest insects in the entire world. Their song can reach levels of 120 decibels—that is equivalent to standing next to a loud thunderclap or a chainsaw!
