Begonia X Semperflorens
The Wax Begonia is the ultimate reliable bloomer, earning its botanical name semperflorens ("ever-flowering") by producing a non-stop parade of color from spring until the first frost. Loved for their succulent, shiny foliage, these plants are often seen as the "jewelry" of garden borders and window boxes. Whether you choose the bright emerald green leaves or the deep, moody bronze varieties, they add a polished, manicured look to any landscape.
In some high-end culinary circles, the petals of the Wax Begonia are used as a gourmet garnish! They have a surprisingly crisp texture and a tart, citrus-like flavorโbut never eat them unless you are 100% sure they haven't been treated with garden chemicals or pesticides.
To grow Begonia X Semperflorens plants, also known as Wax Begonias, follow these steps:

This plant prefers a well-draining soil with adequate moisture retention. The ideal soil pH range is slightly acidic to neutral. A soil mixture that is high in organic matter is also recommended. Avoid using heavy clay soils or soils with poor drainage as they can lead to root rot and other moisture-related issues. It is also important to ensure the soil is nutrient-rich, as this plant requires adequate nutrition to thrive. Adding slow-release fertilizer to the soil prior to planting can be beneficial.
To propagate this plant, take a cutting from a healthy stem that is approximately six inches long. Use a sharp and sterile blade to make the cut and remove the lower leaves. Dip the cut end of the stem in rooting hormone powder and place it in a pot filled with a well-draining potting mix. Make sure to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag to increase humidity and place it in a warm and bright spot but not in direct sunlight. After a few weeks, the cutting should start to root and new growth will appear. Once the new plant has established itself, it can be potted up into its permanent container and cared for like a mature plant.
