Prostrate Spurge

Euphorbia Humifusa

Euphorbia Humifusa

Plant Overview

Often found hugging the sidewalk or sneaking into garden beds, Euphorbia humifusa—commonly known as the Prostrate Spurge—is the ultimate survivalist. While many gardeners view it as a pesky intruder, its ability to form dense, green-and-red mats in the harshest conditions is nothing short of impressive. This resilient ground-hugger is a master of finding a home in the tiny cracks where nothing else dares to grow.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🍃 The Leaf Pattern: Small, oval-shaped leaves grow in opposite pairs along the stem. Look closely, and you might spot a faint, dark reddish-purple "blotch" in the center of each leaf.
  • 🧶 Mat-like Growth: This plant doesn’t grow up; it grows out. It creates a flat, circular carpet that radiates from a single central taproot, often reaching a foot in diameter.
  • 🩸 The Milky Stem: The stems are usually reddish or pinkish and quite brittle. When snapped, they immediately leak a thick, sticky white sap known as latex.

🏡 In Your Garden

  • 🌱 Disturbed Soil Lover: You will most likely find this plant in "distressed" areas—gravel driveways, between paving stones, or in thinning patches of your lawn. It loves sun and hates being shaded out by taller plants.
  • 💧 Drought Resistance: Thanks to its long taproot, it can survive long periods without water. This makes it difficult to kill by neglect; manual removal or improving soil density is usually required to keep it from spreading.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🚫 Irritant Sap: The white "milk" inside the plant is toxic and can cause significant skin irritation or "spurge dermatitis" upon contact. Always wear gloves if you are weeding it by hand.
  • 🐾 Pet & Child Safety: Keep a close eye on pets and toddlers. Ingesting the plant can cause swelling of the mouth, drooling, and digestive upset. If the sap gets into the eyes, it can cause severe pain and temporary vision blurring.

✨ Fun Fact

The name "Spurge" comes from the Old French word espurge, which means "to purge." In ancient times, the potent (and dangerous) sap of various Euphorbia species was used as a powerful laxative to "purge" the body of ailments.

Detailed Care Instructions

Preferred Location
Place in a bright room that is sun drenched almost all day. Or directly in a south-facing window.

When to Water
Some plants require more regular watering than others, which should be done every few days. It's critical to maintain the soil moist all of the time. The water requirements of the same plant placed in pots with varying sizes will differ. Because the water in the smaller pot evaporates faster than the water in the larger pot, it will require more watering. Regardless of pot size, the surface should constantly be maintained moist.
