Maga

Thespesia Grandiflora

Thespesia Grandiflora

Plant Overview

Known affectionately as the "Flor de Maga," this stunning evergreen is the national symbol of Puerto Rico. While it is often mistaken for a common Hibiscus due to its flamboyant crimson blossoms, the Maga is actually a majestic, long-lived tree rather than a shrub. It is celebrated across the Caribbean for its resilience and its ability to turn any landscape into a tropical paradise.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🌺 The Blossoms: Large, saucer-shaped flowers that range from bright pink to deep dark red. Unlike true Hibiscus, these flowers do not close at night and can stay open for several days.
  • 🍃 The Foliage: Rich, dark green leaves that are distinctly heart-shaped (cordate). They have a leathery texture and a glossy sheen that helps the tree shed heavy tropical rains.
  • 🌳 The Form: A medium-sized tree that can reach up to 50 feet. It features a thick, greyish-brown trunk with deeply furrowed bark as it matures.

🏡 In Your Garden

  • ☀️ Sun Seeker: The Maga tree craves full sunlight to produce its signature flowers. While it can survive in partial shade, the "flower power" will be significantly diminished.
  • 🌬️ Wind Resistance: Because it is native to hurricane-prone regions, it has evolved to be quite sturdy. However, it prefers deep, fertile soil where its roots can anchor firmly to withstand heavy gusts.
  • 🪵 Timber Value: Beyond its beauty, the wood is exceptionally hard and durable, historically used for making fine furniture and musical instruments.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • General Safety: Thespesia grandiflora is generally considered non-toxic to humans and is not known for causing skin irritation upon touch.
  • 🐾 Pet Caution: While not listed as a major toxin by the ASPCA, it is always best to prevent pets from chewing on the fibrous leaves or woody stems, as these can cause mild digestive upset or choking hazards.

✨ Fun Fact

Although it is the official national flower of Puerto Rico, the Maga is technically a tree blossom. It was chosen because, unlike the "True Hibiscus," the Maga is endemic only to the island, making it a unique botanical treasure found nowhere else in the wild!

Detailed Care Instructions

Preferred Location
Place in a bright room that is sun drenched almost all day. Or directly in a south-facing window.

When to Water
The presence of a dry surface layer of soil does not indicate that the plant requires water. Instead, stick your finger 1-2" (3-5 cm) deep in the soil to feel dampness or moisture content. If the soil seems dry, it's time to water your greens. If the soil is still moist, however, it is better not to water your plant and instead wait a day or two. Overwatering or waterlogging raises the risk of root rot. So if the soil takes longer than a week to dry, check the light conditions because it's likely that the plant isn't getting enough light. It's fine if the upper layer of soil is dry between waterings, but the deeper soil layer should always have some moisture.

These plant needs regular fertilizing during growing seasons. Fertilizing your plants in dormant state during the winter, might result in scorching or browning of the leaf tips. If mature plants display signs of nutrient insufficiency, fertilizer administration is necessary to restore the plant to its previous state.

These humidity-loving plants thrive in extreme humidity, but they also require lots of sunlight. Keep the plant and the soil surface moist at all times. Low or dry humidity distorts the leaf shape as well as browns the leaf tip. During the winters, it is recommended to shift these plants to a bathroom or use a humidifier to regulate the humidity levels needed by these plants.
