Plant Overview
Known as the "Queen of Philippine Orchids," the Vanda sanderiana (or Waling-waling) is a crown jewel of the botanical world. Native to the island of Mindanao, it was once so revered by the indigenous Bagobo people that they worshipped it as a deity. This orchid is famous for its massive, flat blossoms that look like they’ve been meticulously hand-painted with intricate lace patterns.
🔍 How to Identify
- 🌸 The "Two-Face" Bloom: The flowers are exceptionally large and flat. The upper petals are typically a soft lilac or rose pink, while the lower sepals are larger and covered in a dense, chocolate-maroon "netting" or vein pattern.
- 🍃 Strap-Shaped Leaves: It features leathery, V-shaped leaves that grow in a tight, fan-like vertical arrangement (distichous), reaching lengths of up to a foot.
- 🧶 Aerial Root System: Unlike most houseplants, it produces thick, silvery-gray "spaghetti" roots that hang freely in the air to drink moisture directly from the atmosphere.

- 💨 The Need for Air: This orchid is a true epiphyte and absolutely hates being buried in traditional potting soil. It is best grown in slatted wooden baskets or hung "bare root" so its roots can breathe and dry quickly after watering.

These humidity-loving plants thrive in extreme humidity, but they also require lots of sunlight. Keep the plant and the soil surface moist at all times. Low or dry humidity distorts the leaf shape as well as browns the leaf tip. During the winters, it is recommended to shift these plants to a bathroom or use a humidifier to regulate the humidity levels needed by these plants.
