Iris Flea Beetle

Aphthona Nonstriata

Aphthona Nonstriata

Info

Often called the Blue Iris Flea Beetle, this tiny, shimmering insect is a specialist of the wetlands. While its name might sound like a plant, it is actually a metallic-blue beetle that spent its entire life cycle dedicated to the Iris family. To a gardener, they are a minor nuisance, but to a nature lover, they are like living sapphires resting on green blades.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🔵 Metallic Sheen: A striking, uniform deep blue or greenish-blue metallic luster that glints in the sunlight.
  • 📏 Miniature Size: Very small and oval-shaped, usually measuring only about 2 to 3 millimeters in length.
  • 🦿 Spring-Loaded Legs: Like all flea beetles, they possess greatly enlarged hind "thighs" (femurs) that allow them to catapult away at high speeds when startled.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌿 Iris Specialist: This beetle is almost exclusively found on the Yellow Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus). You can spot their presence by the "window-pane" feeding patterns—long, narrow scars where they have scraped away the leaf surface.
  • 💧 Waterfront Living: Because they follow their host plant, you will find them in damp meadows, pond edges, and marshes. The larvae live near the base of the plant or in the soil, feeding on the roots and rhizomes.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • Harmless to Humans: Despite the "flea" in their name, they do not bite humans or animals. They have no interest in anything other than their favorite plants.
  • 🌻 Plant Health: While they can make an Iris look a bit "tattered" with their feeding scars, they rarely cause enough damage to kill a healthy, established plant.

✨ Fun Fact

The "flea" in their name is a tribute to their incredible jumping power. If you try to touch one, it will disappear in the blink of an eye—not by flying, but by using its powerful back legs to launch itself into the safety of the surrounding foliage!
