Pellucid Hawkmoth

Cephonodes Hylas

Info

The Cephonodes hylas, commonly known as the Coffee Bee Hawkmoth or the Pellucid Hawk Moth, is one of nature’s most charming masters of disguise. Often mistaken for a bumblebee or even a tiny hummingbird, this diurnal moth breaks the "night-flyer" stereotype with its transparent wings and frantic, hovering flight. In many parts of Asia and Africa, spotting one darting between gardenias is considered a delight for any nature watcher.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🪟 Transparent Wings: Unlike most moths, their wings are almost entirely clear. While they emerge from the cocoon with scales, they lose them during their very first flight to reveal a "pellucid" or glass-like window.
  • 🐝 Bee-like Body: They possess a stout, fuzzy body colored in shades of olive green and yellow, punctuated by a prominent dark reddish-brown or black band across the abdomen.
  • 🦐 The "Lobster" Tail: At the end of its abdomen, it sports a distinct, brush-like tuft of black hairs that it can fan out, looking remarkably like a shrimp or lobster tail when viewed from above.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌺 Daytime Pollinator: While most moths wait for the moon, this species is active in bright sunshine. It uses its long proboscis to sip nectar while hovering perfectly still in mid-air, playing a vital role in pollinating deep-throated flowers.
  • 🌿 Host Plant Preference: They are frequent visitors to gardens containing Gardenia, Coffee plants, and Honeysuckle. If you find large, lime-green caterpillars with a signature "horn" on their rear, you likely have a Coffee Bee Hawkmoth nursery nearby!

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • Harmless Friend: Despite their resemblance to bees or wasps, they possess no stinger and are completely incapable of biting. They are "all bark and no bite"—or rather, all buzz and no sting.
  • 🐾 Pet & Human Safe: They do not produce toxins and are safe to have around children and curious pets. They are gentle creatures that will simply fly away if approached too closely.

✨ Fun Fact

When the Coffee Bee Hawkmoth first emerges from its pupa, its wings are actually covered in dull grey scales. It must vibrate its wings vigorously to "shed" these scales, literally vibrating itself into transparency before its first real flight!
