Sooty Ringlet

Erebia Pluto

Erebia Pluto

Info

Known as the Sooty Ringlet, Erebia pluto is a true mountaineer of the insect world. Often referred to as a "ghost of the summits," this butterfly is found in the highest reaches of the Alps and Apennines, frequently fluttering over desolate, rocky slopes where few other creatures can survive. Its dark, somber colors are a specialized survival suit designed for the extreme cold of high-altitude life.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🦋 Velvety Wings: The upper wings are a deep, charcoal black or very dark chocolate brown, occasionally featuring faint reddish-orange smudges or tiny white-pupiled eyespots.
  • 🌑 Camouflaged Underside: When the wings are closed, the underside is a marbled grayish-black, making the butterfly nearly invisible when it rests on granite or limestone rocks.
  • 🧶 Hairy Body: Like many alpine species, it has a notably "fuzzy" or hairy thorax and abdomen, which helps insulate its tiny body against freezing mountain gusts.

🏔️ Habitat & Ecology

  • 🧗 The Scree Specialist: This butterfly is almost exclusively found on scree slopes—areas of loose, sliding rocks and shale. It uses these sun-warmed stones as "heating pads" to raise its body temperature.
  • ☀️ Solar Power: Because the air is so thin and cold at 3,000 meters, the Sooty Ringlet is a "lateral basker." It tilts its dark wings toward the sun to absorb maximum thermal energy before it has the strength to fly.
  • 🌾 Hardy Larvae: The caterpillars are just as tough as the adults, feeding on resilient alpine grasses like Festuca (Fescue) and hiding deep within rock crevices to survive the heavy winter snowpack.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • Harmless: The Sooty Ringlet is completely safe for humans and pets. It does not bite, sting, or carry any toxins.
  • 🛡️ Fragile Resident: While it isn't dangerous to us, we are a threat to it. Because it lives in such specific, high-altitude niches, it is highly sensitive to climate change; as the mountains warm, this butterfly has nowhere higher to go.

✨ Fun Fact

  • ❄️ The Ice King: Erebia pluto holds the record for being one of the highest-living butterflies in Europe. It has been spotted at altitudes exceeding 3,000 meters (nearly 10,000 feet), where it comfortably flies over glaciers and permanent snowfields.
