Meadow Spittlebug

Known widely for the mysterious "cuckoo spit" found clinging to garden stems in late spring, the Meadow Spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius) is a master of disguise and a world-champion jumper. While often mistaken for a plant disease or a strange fungus due to the bubbly foam it leaves behind, this tiny insect is a resilient traveler found across the Northern Hemisphere. They are the ultimate "hidden" neighbors of the garden world, living most of their early lives inside a self-made bubble bath.

🔍 How to Identify

• 🧽 The "Spit" Nest: The most obvious sign is a mass of white, frothy bubbles on plant stems. This is actually a protective home created by the nymph (young bug) to keep itself moist and hidden from predators.
• 📐 Frog-like Shape: Adults are small (about 6mm) with a blunt, wide head and a wedge-shaped body that gives them their other common name: the Froghopper.
• 🎨 Master Camouflage: They are incredibly variable in color. A single population can include individuals that are mottled brown, straw-colored, jet black, or even striped.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

• 🥤 Sap Enthusiasts: These insects feed exclusively on xylem sap—the watery fluid that moves nutrients up through a plant. Because this fluid is low in energy, they must drink huge quantities, which they then process into the "spit" that protects them.
• 🌸 Generalist Guests: Unlike some insects that only like one type of flower, the Meadow Spittlebug is happy on over 1,000 different host plants, ranging from garden lavender and roses to wild grasses and trees.
• 🚀 Elite Athletes: When threatened, an adult can jump 700mm into the air. To put that in perspective, if a human had that same ability, we could leap over a 200-meter skyscraper in a single bound.
