Hornet Mimic Hover Fly

Volucella Zonaria

Volucella Zonaria

Info

Known as the Hornet Mimic Hoverfly, this impressive insect is nature’s ultimate master of disguise. While it wears the bold, yellow-and-black "warning" colors of a hornet to scare away predators, it is actually a gentle giant of the fly family. Often found hovering near late-summer flowers, it is the largest hoverfly species in many parts of Europe, frequently surprising gardeners with its size and loud hum.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🐝 Size and Shape: It is exceptionally large for a fly, reaching up to 2.5cm in length with a broad, flattened abdomen that mimics the girth of a hornet.
  • 🎨 Striking Colors: Look for two thick, bright yellow bands on a dark chestnut-to-black abdomen, paired with a reddish-brown thorax and a yellow face.
  • 🪽 The Wings: Unlike wasps, it only has one pair of wings, which often have a smoky-brown tint along the leading edge.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌺 Nectar Lover: You will most likely spot them in gardens, parks, and woodland edges during mid-to-late summer, where they feast on nectar-rich plants like Ivy, Buddleja (Butterfly Bush), and Scabious.
  • 🏠 The Nest Intruder: Despite their peaceful adult life, they have a daring start; females enter the nests of social wasps or hornets to lay their eggs. The larvae then live in the bottom of the nest, acting as "cleaners" by eating waste and dead larvae.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • Status: Completely harmless and stingless.
  • 🛡️ The Bluff: While it looks intimidating and may even mimic the "buzz" of a hornet, it lacks a stinger and cannot bite. It relies entirely on its scary appearance to stay safe from birds and humans.

✨ Fun Fact

To sneak into a hornet’s nest without being attacked, the Volucella zonaria likely uses chemical camouflage, mimicking the scent of the host colony so the guards don’t recognize it as an intruder!
