Black Varnish Tree

Holigarna Arnottiana

Holigarna Arnottiana

Plant Overview

Commonly known as the Black Varnish Tree or Cheru, Holigarna arnottiana is a majestic giant native to the lush Western Ghats of India. While its dense, glossy canopy offers a beautiful tropical aesthetic, it is a tree that demands respect from a distance. For centuries, local communities have used its potent sap as a permanent ink, but its "burning" touch is legendary among forest hikers.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🍃 The Leaves: Look for large, leathery, paddle-shaped leaves (obovate) that are crowded at the ends of the branches. They have a distinct "cuneate" base that narrows sharply toward the stem.
  • 🖤 Sap Reaction: The most iconic trait is the milky sap; when the bark or a leaf is bruised, the juice turns a deep, indelible black almost instantly upon contact with air.
  • 🌳 Growth Habit: This is a massive evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 35 meters, featuring a smooth, greyish-white bark often stained with dark "tears" of dried resin.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌧️ Rainforest Resident: This tree is a specialist of moist deciduous and evergreen forests. It thrives in high-humidity environments and deep, loamy soils where water is abundant.
  • 🏔️ Endemic Beauty: You won't find this tree naturally occurring outside of the Indian subcontinent's western mountain range, where it plays a vital role in the forest canopy, providing nesting sites for tropical birds.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🚫 CAUSTIC WARNING: The entire tree contains a volatile oil called urushiol (similar to Poison Ivy). Contact with the sap, or even the smoke from burning the wood, can cause severe contact dermatitis, characterized by painful blisters, intense itching, and swelling.
  • 🐾 Pets & Kids: It is absolutely not recommended for residential gardens with pets or children. The sap remains toxic even in fallen, dried leaves or dead wood.

✨ Fun Fact

  • 🖋️ The Permanent Marker: The sap is so incredibly permanent that it was traditionally used by washermen (Dhobis) in India as "laundry ink" to mark clothes. Once the Cheru sap stains a fabric, it will never wash out, lasting the entire lifetime of the garment!
