Coprinellus Radians

Coprinellus Radians

Coprinellus Radians

Info

Known as the "Radiant Inky Cap," this mushroom is a fascinating recycler that looks like it belongs in a miniature forest of rust. It is famous for growing out of a striking, fuzzy orange mat called an ozonium, which looks like a patch of orange carpet or velvet spread across rotting wood. While it might look like something out of a fantasy novel, it is a common sight in damp gardens and even old basements.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🍄 The Cap: Small and bell-shaped, starting out tawny or pale brown. It is covered in tiny, sugary-looking grains or scales when young.
  • 🖋️ The Gills: They begin white, turn grayish-brown, and eventually liquefy into a black, "inky" fluid as the mushroom matures.
  • 🧡 The Ozonium: The most distinct feature—a dense, bright orange or rusty-colored mat of fuzzy mycelium at the base of the stem where it meets the wood.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🪵 The Wood Recycler: You will almost always find this mushroom on decaying hardwood. It loves woodchips, old logs, or buried roots, playing a vital role in breaking down organic matter.
  • 🏠 Indoor Visitor: Because it thrives on damp wood, it is one of the few mushrooms known to sprout inside homes, typically appearing on moisture-damaged floorboards or damp drywall.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🚫 WARNING: Inedible. While not known to be aggressively toxic like some of its cousins, the Radiant Inky Cap has no culinary value and its edibility is officially "uncertain."
  • 🧪 Alcohol Interaction: Many mushrooms in the Coprinellus family contain coprine, which can cause severe nausea and heart palpitations if consumed with alcohol. It is best to admire this one purely with your eyes.

✨ Fun Fact

The orange "ozonium" at the base isn't just a decoration; it is a specialized form of sterile mycelium. It can survive for years on a piece of wood, remaining dormant through dry spells and waiting for the perfect moment of humidity to "bloom" with mushrooms again.
