Rosette Lichen

Physcia Millegrana

Physcia Millegrana

Info

The Mealy Rosette Lichen (Physcia millegrana) is a tiny, hardy survivor often found decorating the bark of urban trees like living lace. Though it is often mistaken for a simple fungus, it is actually a complex partnership—a "symbiosis"—between a fungus and an alga working together. Known for its grit, this lichen is one of the few that can thrive in busy, polluted cities where more sensitive species disappear.

🔍 How to Identify

  • 🎨 Body Color: It features a pale silver-grey to whitish-green thallus (body) that turns a more distinct green when it rains.
  • 🌸 Growth Habit: It forms small, flat, star-shaped rosettes that often overlap to create a dense, "mealy" carpet over bark or wood.
  • 🧂 Granular Edges: The margins of its lobes are covered in tiny, dust-like grains called soredia, giving it a textured, flour-dusted appearance.

🌲 Habitat & Ecology

  • 🌳 Bark & Beyond: While it prefers the bark of deciduous trees like Maples and Oaks, it is a pioneer species that will happily colonize old wooden fences, cemetery headstones, and even weathered park benches.
  • 🌬️ Pollution Pioneer: This lichen is famously "nitrophilous," meaning it loves nitrogen-rich environments. Because of this, it flourishes in agricultural areas and urban centers where other lichens might struggle to breathe.

⚠️ Safety & Toxicity

  • 🛡️ Status: Generally harmless and non-toxic.
  • 🚫 Not Edible: While not poisonous, it is tough, leathery, and has no culinary value. Its main "danger" is simply being unappetizing. It serves a much better purpose as a micro-habitat for tiny tardigrades and insects!

✨ Fun Fact

The scientific name millegrana literally translates to "thousand grains." This refers to those tiny granules on its edges, which are actually "starter kits" containing both the fungus and the alga; they break off and blow away in the wind to start a brand-new colony elsewhere!
